Cancer
is a disease in which cells multiply wildly, destroy healthy tissue,
and endanger life. About 100 kinds of cancer attack people. The disease
is a leading cause of death in many countries. Cancer occurs in most
other animals and in many kinds of plants as well as in people.
Cancer strikes people of all ages but is most common in the middle-aged
and the elderly. It occurs about equally in males and females. The disease
can attack any part of the body and may spread to other parts. The sites
most often affected are the skin, the digestive organs, the lungs, the
prostate gland, and the female breasts.
Major types of cancer Cancers that affect human beings are classified in two ways: (1) by primary body site--that is, the part of the body where cancer first develops; and (2) by the type of tissue in which the cancer originates.(Source: World Book)
